For a direct replacement, measuring an existing correctly fitted door is often the clearest starting point. If the door is missing or the overlay will change, the cabinet opening, face-frame arrangement, gaps, and hinge setup must be used to calculate the finished size. Confirm the measuring method for the specific cabinet before ordering.
Remove or fully open the door and measure the finished width and height in more than one place using a dependable tape measure. Record the dimensions clearly and keep width and height in the same order on every line. Follow Trinity's current measuring guide and verify each entry before approving the order.
Made-to-order doors require precise final dimensions. The current Trinity guide uses measurements to the nearest 1/16 inch, but customers should preserve the exact precision stated in Trinity's approved order instructions. Never round several different doors to one assumed “standard” size.
Overlay is the amount a closed door covers the cabinet opening or face frame. Full-overlay and partial-overlay layouts use different door sizes and hinge positions. Overlay must be considered when calculating a new door from an opening; it is not necessary to recalculate when copying a correctly fitted existing door size.
A full-overlay door covers most of the cabinet face frame or box edge, leaving a smaller visible reveal between adjacent doors and drawers. The finished size depends on the opening, cabinet construction, desired gaps, and hinge system. Do not assume one universal full-overlay measurement.
A partial-overlay door covers only part of the face frame, leaving more of the frame visible. Older kitchens often use this layout. When replacing doors, match the existing door dimensions and hinge relationship unless the entire overlay system is being intentionally changed.
An inset door fits inside the cabinet opening or face frame instead of covering it. It requires controlled gaps, square openings, suitable hinges, and precise fitting. Wood movement and installation conditions matter, so inset orders should be reviewed carefully with the cabinet professional handling the installation.
Measure the cabinet opening, document whether the cabinet is framed or frameless, identify the intended overlay or inset gap, and record the hinge type and neighboring clearances. Send clear photos and measurements to Trinity or the installer. Do not guess a finished door size from the opening alone.
The total opening, overlay, center gap, outside gaps, face-frame width, and hinge arrangement determine the two finished widths. Do not divide the opening in half without accounting for these details. Use the current Trinity measuring guide or have the cabinet professional calculate the final door sizes.
Lazy Susan doors can use different constructions and attachment methods, so their sizes cannot be calculated safely from a generic formula. Identify how the existing doors meet, which door is hinged to the cabinet, door thickness, overlay, and hardware. Send photos, old-door measurements, and hardware details for review.
When replacing a correctly fitted drawer front, record its finished width and height and note whether it is a slab or five-piece style. If the front is missing, measure the opening and document overlay, adjacent gaps, and drawer-box position. Keep each drawer front tied to a labeled cabinet location.
Label every opening and matching piece, measure each item independently, record width and height consistently, check the list a second time, and compare paired doors and drawer banks. Verify overlay, hinge boring, style, and material before approval. Made-to-order products may not be returnable simply because the customer supplied the wrong size.
